Sports Injuries

Dr. Deppen is an elite amateur triathlete and a competitive road racer.  He has completed 3 Ironman triathlons and finished in at least the top 10% in each.  He has also completed a number marathons earning a sub 3 hour time, and an invitation to Boston and NYC marathons.  Dr. Deppen has taken his passion a bit further to the ultra-marathon distance completing every distance from 50K to 100 miles.  He recently finished his 100 mile race in under 24 hours.  Dr. Deppen also played semi-competitive volleyball in college.  So as an athlete he understands what kinds of injuries come with training and competing at a high level.

Dr. Deppen has also began coaching the local Cross Country team at Niles North High school.  He has since worked with many of the athletes on the team and was successful in keeping every varsity athlete healthy to compete in every meet this last season.  Dr. Deppen worked closely with the other coaches to implement scientific training strategies to both improve the performance and prevent injuries for the team.  As a coach he is learning how scientific training can improve athletes of all abilities.  Dr. Deppen is also earning his USA track and field coaching certification this winter.

As a physician Dr. Deppen treats many runners and triathletes.  While classically this can be a challenging group to work with – the smallest of asymmetries can cause major injuries – because of his knowledge of treatment programs, and also his understanding of the psychological aspects that go into endurance training he has had much success working with this group of people.

Dr. Deppen has also worked with rowers, speed skaters, swimmers, power lifters, hockey players, and cyclists.
